You’re Not An Emerging Writer Unless You’ve Published A Book :

Some might argue that it is not the job of the country’s premier arts body to fund journalism — not even the literary, creative non-fiction kind — because it pales next to fiction as a literary art. I would disagree with that, obviously, as I am not a fiction writer. But funding for that kind of journalism hardly comes from within the journalism industry itself, awash with commercial publications that pay pitiful amounts ‘per page’ and online outlets which pay $50 ‘per post’ regardless of length, or far more frequently which don’t pay anything at all.

This is generating good discussion: some thoughts I had on the Australia Council’s narrow definition of ‘emerging’ writer.

About ten years ago I had root canal surgery in the chair at the dentist. Shortly thereafter I was in hospital with the onset of septic shock. It was the worst thing, just about ever. I woke up with bruises on my chest from where the surgeon had had to use his knee to lever my jaw open, which had started to lock.

In any case I tell you this story because a) the dentist, fucking go there if you can before it gets to that point, and b) because the only good thing to pluck from this crucible of horror was this fantastic hallucination I experienced as the anesthesia took hold:

I saw myself standing in an enormous, mist-filled green field looking into a tree line. All around me I could hear the envelope of silence, an almost audible sound of silence, which was suddenly broken when a band of horses thundered out of the trees towards me. I felt their wake brush me as they came within inches of my body while I stood there motionless and unafraid. A band of white horses, just like these. Except not from the sea, obviously.

Then they were gone and silence returned until I heard the surgeon say, “bone-stretching.” After that it went back to horrifying, but the horse thing was, I think, the only truly transcendental moment of my life.

Vincent D’Onofrio was, for a lot of this time, sitting in a chair on the stage which is very tall because he is kind of a giant. He was wearing scruffy black jeans, old sneakers, and a black collared shirt, which, because of the way he was sitting, was popped open a little in the place that reveals a person’s bellybutton and my mind strayed a minute to wondering about if there is and if so how much lint might be in there, and maybe harvesting it, maybe, I was just sort of thinking that for a pleasant moment and tuning out just for a second when Vincent D’Onofrio stood up and planted himself on the stage two feet away and said, “So I was taught to lead with my dick.”

Forget Wall St, it’s time for the serious journalism.

I have zero memory of taking this photo. I wanted to capture this moment, obviously, for some reason at the time. I think I was much more narcissistic when I was in my twenties, like many young people on the internet are, trying to prove constantly that you are someone, that you’re doing something. Which also makes me think, though, are we really that much more narcissistic than people older than us? Or would this have happened to anyone who waded into a time and place where it was possible to capture and share every moment of your life with everyone you know? If we told ourselves no stories of our lives, then the things that happen to us would just be an extraordinarily confusing string of unconnected occurrences.
